RSHE – relationship, sex, health education
Intent
Primrose Hill Church of England Academy believe that a strong RSHE education is important to help our pupils develop into well-rounded members of society, who can make a positive contribution to their community.
The vision for pupils, staff and others linked to our school is to always look to achieve our personal best in every aspect of school life. We all work together to grow a bright future.
By teaching RSHE, we aim to ensure:
- Pupils achieve their personal best.
- A welcoming, inclusive, school with real community feel and is a place where everyone is valued.
- Pupils and staff treat each other equitably, fairly, with kindness and with mutual respect. At all times, staff and pupils are encouraged to show a high regard for the needs and feelings of others through their actions and words.
- Pupils and staff are enterprising and approach challenges with a ‘can-do’ attitude.
- The needs and interests of all pupils, irrespective of gender, culture, ability or aptitude, will be promoted through an inclusive and varied RSHE curriculum at our school.
- Our environment is safe and clean with everyone sharing responsibility for it.
- Our culture is one of continuous improvement, creativity and enthusiasm.
We support the teaching of Relationships Sex and Health Education through Coram Life Education and its SCARF program.
SCARF: Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship
SCARF provides a whole-school approach to building these essential foundations which are crucial for children to achieve their best, academically and socially. This curriculum supports health, wellbeing, relationships and drugs education for children ‘helping children make healthy choices’.
Relationships Education
Relationships education focusses on giving pupils the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships, and to build their self-efficacy. Health education focusses on equipping pupils with the knowledge they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing.
As part of The Diocese of Gloucester Academy Trust Primrose Hill Church of England Academy undertakes to follow the principles for faith sensitive and inclusive relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education (RSHE) as set out in the 8 points of the Church of England Charter for RSE, which have been based on the principles established by the Church of England’s Pastoral Advisory Group and exemplified in the key documents – Pastoral Principles for Living Well Together and Valuing All God’s Children.
We commit:
- To work in partnership with parents and carers.
- That RSHE will be delivered professionally and as an identifiable part of PSHE.
- That RSHE will be delivered in a way that affords dignity and shows respect to all who make up our diverse community.
- That RSHE will seek to build resilience in our pupils to help them form healthy relationships and to keep themselves safe.
- That RSHE will promote healthy resilient relationships set in the context of character and virtue development.
- That RSHE will be based on honest and medically accurate information from reliable sources of information, including about the law and legal rights.
- To take a particular care to meet the individual needs of all pupils including those with special needs and disabilities.
- To seek pupils’ views about RSHE so that the teaching can be made relevant to their lives.
